Hexagon Mobile Shelter Design
This project was initiated in response to the issue of typhoon affecting residents of Palawan in Philippines. The project core concept was “Mateship” as Philos usually have huge family living together with close relationship with their neighbours.
The emergency shelter is designed to house 3 to 5 refugees, protecting and providing them secure temporary accomodation in time of the natural disaster.
It is inspired by nature as people living in Palawan have a strong feeling and meaningful connection to nature.
As such the structure of the refugee shelter is based on the structure of hexagonal cells of wax made by bees who store honey and eggs in the honeycomb to sustain them throughout the flowerless months of autumn and winter.
All components of shelter are secured by mechanical joints and hand tighten-able fasteners, allowing for easy assembly without using tools. Shelters are situated together to be a part of a beehive-like structure. Outdoor spaces between shelters are created for outdoor activity which helps refugees bond and support and comfort each other.
